Introducing the Asanuma 28mm F2.8 m42

ii

Information technology'south my "so bad it's expert" lens. Don't pay more than $25 for information technology.

Asanuma 28mm F2.8, M42 version.

It's near the same shape and size as the FA31. The focus band is exceptionally squeamish, ultra-damped and with a huge 270 degree throw. The aperture is smoothen, with i/2 stop detents. In terms of strait upwards build quality, I'd have to admit it beats the FA31... ergonomically speaking it'southward my favorite lens always. This is the M42 version. I also own the F-mountain one, and there are Canon and Minolta mount versions also.

I've tried many, many cheapo lenses dumpster-diving on eBay. Most of the old off-brand 28 and 35 mm lenses are just apparently bad. This Asanuma - a rebranded Tokina OEM equally far as I can tell - isn't practiced, just ... it is bad in ways such that I can take pleasure in its badness.

Information technology's the quality slope between f/2.viii and f/11 that amuses me. f/ii.eight is smeared and myopic, f/11 is make clean, contrasty and reasonably precipitous. In between is ... in between. There's all kinds of fun to be had in this playground. The M42 lens arrived just last week, but I've owned the Nikon version for five-6 years at present it'southward its my most employ lens on DX .. I never seem to tire of it.

f/2.viii for that vintage, dreamy look....

... notwithstanding end downward to f/11 and you lot'd not imagine it'southward the same lens.

Asanuma

FA31

Different days, lighting, position etc., just shut enough in the "this is a moving picture of that" sense, and useful enough to make my points, equally follows:

i. No one should expect the FA31 to be 10x better than the Asanuma 28 considering it costs 10x more. Information technology never works that mode. The FA31 is f/1.8. How much is that worth every bit a "feature" vs f/two.8? How about native KAF-mountain vs m42? Equally discussion of value is meaningless.

ii. The example photos demonstrate how the Asanuma tin be objectively bad and subjectively nice at the aforementioned time. Mushy corners, plenty of CA ... less item throughout. All true. Nearly of that however is subconscious past the time you downsize the image to fit on screen. At that indicate its the low distortion, high contrast, and bonny highlight rendering that tend to dominate the evaluation.

The FA31 is a keen, perchance the greatest, people lens. For landscape and technical subjects close to inf. focus and stopped down it is capable simply not pinnacle.

If want to say annihilation about this though, it's don't pixel peep. Information technology doesn't demand to be good to look good, because if it looks adept .. it is practiced.

I make the same sort of comparison, Some years back Leica brought out the "best" 50mm F2.0 lens ever made for $7500, no AF and I don't think information technology included electronics. And then i think to myself what of the used SMC Pentax-K 50mm F2.0'south and SMC Pentax-A 50mm F2.0'due south. Same focal length, aperture, usability and very like size and I sell them for $15-25 CAD ($12-20 USD). Despite the Leica being maybe the best is information technology really 30-50x ameliorate than the Pentax? That is simply impossible, physics won't let it. Pentax sold thousands of these "kit" lenses over the years so they couldn't have been total crap!
